Herr Troll

I can finally post this painting. This was a Christmas gift for a friend from 10th Group. He goes by xSFmed but everyone calls him The Troll.

I wanted to do a portrait of his little mascot; a troll doll who wears a GI Joe green beret. I also had to do it fast as time was limited. I decided to use acrylic paint on primed hard board. I'd forgotten just how fast acrylic dries in the desert. Working fast was good but changing styles became very important.

I decided to go van Gogh since he painted quickly and the style was suitable to the work. The picture on the wall is the avatar of a mutual friend who had passed away exactly one year prior to the start of this painting. The wall needed something and I was going to put a small version of Starry Night until it hit me. CAR's avatar was what really needed to be there.

I signed it Vincent van Troghll on the front and sent it with a note, written in German, as a commissioned work being delivered. I believe he's very happy with it. Thank you for your long and devoted service Herr Troll.

Progress is actually being made. This image is a bit over exposed but so are all my update/preliminary/not-quite-done shots. Somehow I always manage to get a good one after they're done though.

Still quite a bit to do here. I don't even have all his medals on yet! Gah.

When my parents were visiting (you remember, when dad ate the dog biscuits?) my dad had a good look at all the bling the Major had on. "Four bronze stars?"

Yes, Dad. Four. And stop trying to eat those "cookies" next to the coffee pot.

A Major Endeavor...

Yeah, you knew I had to go there.

Starting work on the Major this week. For this portrait I'm using an oil primed, Belgian linen, in an 18" x 24" stretched canvas. First, I sketched/transferred the image to the canvas with a blue pencil. I find that the blue doesn't disappear or smear when I oil the canvas. Then, using burnt umber, I go over the pencil with oil paint. I try to put in a few shadows at this point as well. After that I let the paint sketch dry.

I'm still considering what to do with the background. The Major did not want a flag or anything like that. Seeing as he is in Intelligence, the thought occurred to me to put the matrix in the background, all green and glowy with strings of symbols and numbers.

Just a passing thought. No, really.

Not finished but certainly getting there. I think one more session should do it. I wish I could show more details but the weather is not cooperating. Dark and rainy is not good for exposure time. Flashes just give horrible feedback.

The portrait of my sister is finished. I will most likely hang on to it for a while until I can varnish it. In the mean time, I think I'll order a small plaque for the bottom of the frame like I did for Gordon Bernelle's portrait.

Teacup Shelly Blue

Update of Shelly Blue teacup painting. It's getting there. One more session with it and I'll most likely call it done.

Couple of surprises along the way. First, gold has a lot of rose in it. You expect yellows, browns, even some green. But the rose surprised me. Second, shadows still work best with some purple. Wasn't expecting that. I use it a lot with portrait work but it makes a pretty good shadow even on still life.

So, today being Michelle's birthday, I had to post some progress on her portrait. What I'm concentrating on lately is her clothing. But I've also noticed a distinct lack of an essential element when painting portraits of children. Green. Believe it or not, children tend to have more green tones in the lower third of their faces. Personally I think it's the translucent skin over (absolutely no fat and...) veins. Their faces are like the inside of adult wrists. Blue veins under skin tend to give a green hue. So, I will have to revisit that omission.

Additionally, I've started working on a study of one of my Grandmother's tea cups. Interestingly enough, this is a Shelly china cup. I think she and Michelle must be laughing about this today. I love Grandma Winnie's tea cups. I've wanted to paint them since they arrived at my house. But I have always been loathe to attempt any such thing in the shadow of the great Jelaine Faunce; the penultimate realist of anything remotely related to (among other things) epicurean comforts. Jelaine not only lives in the same city as I do, and is a genuinely nice person, AND... I own one of her pieces (see previous post), but her mother's teacups are some of her most detailed paintings. So I've been afraid to even attempt to paint them. However, I now know why the chicken crossed the road. Just to see if she could do it, without getting flattened.

More Progress

Making definite progress on this portrait. It gives me hope to think that it will not take me even half as long to finish as some of the work I did when I first started portraiture. Could there be hope for me at this after all?

Well, we will soon see. I am honored to be able to start doing portraits of our military. Major Charles Faint, of the United States Army, will be the subject of my next portrait. It feels wonderful to know that there is someone else out there who will allow me to capture them on canvas for future generations.

Starting to Look Like a Proper Painting

It's starting to look like a proper painting now. After a talk with my instructor, The background was changed from the black to a more upbeat hue of blue and lavender. I'm happy with the touches of lavender as Michelle wore that color quite often.

Also of interest: I forgot to take the original picture with me so I worked on this in a class for four hours from memory. I'm sure I'll have plenty to correct next time.

Laying in Some Color

Starting to lay in some hair and skin tones. One of the very best secrets I've found in portraiture is the use of caput mort for shadows. That color is so perfect that it saves mountains of time mixing shadows. This stage is where the portrait looks LEAST like the original. Everything is too flat because, at this point, everything is very thin. My main concern, other than tone, is to fill in the white of the canvas with the first coat of color. So, the paint is very thin and just kind of washed in.

Portraits take anywhere from 3-5 coats of color in the facial area just to get them to look "alive." As with any painting in oil, the first layers must be the thinest or you risk the painting not lasting through time. Thicker paint on the bottom layer will continue to dry, shrink, and crack the upper layers.

I've also decided to use a bit of blue in the black background. Stark black just isn't right here, even with the surrounding white around the figure.

First Layer - Paint over sketch

This morning I began to paint over the pencil sketch I did on the canvas last night. I've done this in a single color (raw umber) that has been thinned with turp. This will keep the sketch from being smudged.

Many artists do not use pencil on their canvases and instead go straight to the thinned umber. Frankly, I'm just not that good. Pencil will erase, even from canvas.

For anyone interested in the process I use, I generally follow the style of Daniel Greene. I find that his skin tone pallet makes the most sense to me, as does his style.

I've already seen some small changes I wish to make to the eyes but not as much as you might think. Michelle had a lazy eye and making them perfect would not really be a true representation of how I remember her.

Time to start a new portrait. The picture is over 30 years old and has quite a bit of damage as well as color fading. The cross hatching will push me that last millimeter over the edge. Sketch below.

Well, I can't believe it but I think I did most of what I set out to do to her. No, I think I did everything. So now it just needs to dry thoroughly and get sprayed. The spraying isn't going to happen for some time though. I think I'll give it to her first and then just drop by the house in a few months to spray.

So Happy Birthday again, Susie. Now will you please burn the other one? You can't have this one until I know the other has been disposed of. You can always trade me for this one.

So I'm almost done with a portrait of Susie Portz. This is to replace one I did of her a few years back. I hope to use it as a bribe to get her to destroy the other one. It was that bad.

I'm hoping to finish it tomorrow. I still need to work on the cross and her watch at the very least. Probably a bit more on her face and hair as well and the blouse needs more detail...

OK, so I may not finish it tomorrow. But that's the plan.

Grape Bowl in Progress

I am just dying to get back to painting. I'm trying to play catch-up with my work load and have even hired a part time intern to help with some of the web elements of my day job. But I have paintings waiting that will just have to continue to wait since they don't generate income.

This is one of the paintings in progress. It still needs a lot more work as you can see, but I think it's coming along very nicely. I'll tell you this; crystal is hard! Maybe cheap glass would have been easier, I don't know. But that little bowl was a gift from my mom after the birth of my second son. It's a Waterford and it catches the light like you wouldn't believe. Capturing all those colors makes me go cross-eyed. The actual picture is below. I probably shouldn't post the actual image. My painting looks really good until you see the real thing. But I want to show the level of color that the crystal picks up, even in the reflected image. It's just amazing!

And this is the second of the two. My mother wanted me to bid for her on these (and I did, mom, honest) but I did not want to spend too much of her money as she had already paid for a seat knowing she could not even attend. Well that, and the fact that my mom would bid on the ashtray I made in 2nd grade because she's proud of me. But I am glad that someone bought them who just purchased a new house and sincerely wanted them for the decor. Thank you, kind sir!

No you are not losing the color from your eyesight. This is a black and white painting. Looks kind of like a sketch. Which it should. That was the look I was going for. What I wasn't going for was high school art contest. I think that may be what I got though.

Anyway, the idea was inspired by some lineart paintings that Pottery Barn has for sale. I wanted to do something architectural but simple for a charity auction this Saturday. They are 16x20s, acrylic on canvas.

This will be a series of two and will be sold together. The Pottery Barn inspirations are seen below. One thing I will say; I will not be misspelling Colosseum.

Tulip

Tulips have got to be my second favorite flower (after the ever popular rose). Irises come in a close third. I’ve always wanted to do a tulip study but was afraid I would not do the flower justice. Actually, I’m not unhappy with the results. Enjoy!

Summer was Crazy but Geri is Done

Summer has been insane but I'm finally back to painting. The first order of business was to finish Geri. The original looks much better of course but it is so hard for me to capture the details in my paintings without getting the feedback from the light. I'm always fighting hot spots.

"Life at 45 rpm"

So I'm watching Big Bang Theory on TV (I love that show) and one of the characters is wearing a belt buckle that is shaped like a 45rpm adaptor.

I was laughing so hard, not only because of the memories that shape brought back, but because I was the only one who noticed and recognized it.

It inspired me to start a series of items from my Baby Boomer childhood. So this is the first of a group of oddities from the 1960s. If nothing else, these paintings will make great conversation pieces.

Geri Smith

I'm working on a portrait of a very good friend of mine. This is for her birthday which is Friday. I did not want to post before now just in case she reads this blog. But it is late at night and I realize that I will not have it done by the time I give her a card and the other gift I have for her so... I've decided to print out the picture of how it looks so far and give it to her with the other gift when I see her.

I just hope she is happy with it when it's done. I like the way it's going but my family keeps saying, "Too bad it's not as good as Gordon. If you could just make it more like Gordon."

Well, hopefully when I'm done, it will look as good as Gordon. But for Pete's sake, I'm nowhere near done.

Gordon Bernell - Getting There

Getting there. He's definitely getting there.

I have come to love this man I never met. His eyes, his smile, his good taste in women (Sue/Ellie). He even produced a daughter I'm proud to call my friend.

I only hope they are as happy with the finished product as I am with the on-going process.

9 Ball in the Corner Pocket

Honestly, I think I could miss this shot. But the real issue is the feedback from the wet paint. It makes it look like there are white spots on the canvas.

This was from a picture I snapped while my husband and son were playing. The ball actually did end up right here with the nine right side up. And yes, we do have blue felt.

ACEO - Art Card Editions and Originals

So I thought I would try an ACEO for a daily painting. This is a carousel horse done in acrylics on artboard. I will most likely do a series of carousel horses in full body profile.

Fun with Fabrics

So I thought I'd leave an update on the shirt and sweater. Progressing slowly. Can't do too much while the white of the collar is still wet. The stripes keep bleeding.

On another note, I read a great story about John Singer Sargent this weekend. It appeared in the class notes from one of his students. Apparently the big complaint about his amazing portraits came from his sitters. They were never happy with their mouthes. She writes, "It was a common experience for Sargent, as probably for all portrait painters, to be asked to alter some feature in a face, generally the mouth. Indeed, this happened so often that he used to define a portrait as 'a likeness in which there was something wrong about the mouth.'"

My Appologies to Bill Alexander

I recently received a note from my brother-in-law (who is a real artist) asking if I was still doing a painting a day. Hah! Not since July of last year. I'm still working on Gordon but needed something to do while part of his shirt is drying so it got me thinking it would be a good idea to do a daily painting. I've never been any good at landscapes so I decided it was a good idea to practice, but where to start?

Did you ever watch "The Magic of Oil Painting" with Bill Alexander? I did. He does landscapes and he does them quickly. Like in a half hour show. I always wanted to do that but was sure I would make a mess of it. He is so freaking happy all the time. And he has this cute little Prussian accent. Anyway, I watched his show every day. That was about 25 years ago.

Well, without the benefit of any current episodes, I attempted to remember how it was done. I didn't want to take forever but I did not trust my memory of how he did it. So I started with a small canvas (8" x 10") in order to cut the time. I'm not sure it helped. It took me twice as long as Bill (about an hour), but I did manage to get it done in a day!

Gordon gets a Hue

Gordon has a background hue. He also has a bit more color to his face. I just hope it's the right color. He also has more of his own hazel eyes now.

I'm hoping to work on his shirt and sweater this weekend but I have some catching up to do on some work for one of his in-laws.

I'll tell you what though...if his wife likes it then I'm happy.

Well, OK, I'd really like his daughter to be happy too.

Gordon Bernell - A Begining

OK, well, it's a begining. Oils, oy! The whole "it's still wet" thing is driving me crazy. Yeah, they're easier to blend, but much harder to cover layers. I will probably never underpaint an oil again.

On the up side, Gordon here seems happy enough. And... I found out why the original picture has that flat, boring, blue-grey background. Turns out the photo was taken in a booking room! It was an employee of the month picture for the corrections department and that was where they took it.

Oils? Cover the furniture and the dogs.

Still painting in acrylics but have signed up for an oil class; specifically portraits in oil. I like doing portraits best but have always worried about working in oils. You learn to appreciate water solubility when your first child is born. It's a tough thing to give up. But, I have taken on a friend's request for a portrait of her dad and I want it to last. Oils seem like the right way to go, so wish me luck.

I can see that I will have to resist the urge to go back and mess with all of them once the last one is finished.
The series of ladybugs revealed this tendency and I'm not sure if it's a good thing or not so for now I shall resist.

The last in the Ladybug series. The hardest thing about finishing #3 was not going back to #1 and #2 to make changes. Anyway, this series is finished.

Things I learned:

aYou have to paint grass backward (bottom to top)
aBugs are small. Really small; even in larger than life size.
aI can finish a series without going nuts.

"Hummingbird" was painted this weekend on 7/7/07. It didn't help. The title of this post was my reaction when it was done. (Ughh)
Apparently I have no skills with watercolor and still need to pay some serious attention to object placement and phi.
Glad I bought the small box of pencils. I'm thinking it's time to go back to my beloved acrylics.

Modest Success

So now, encouraged by Julie's enthusiasm for "Leave a Message" I decide not to throw my canvasses into the garbage.

No, instead I sallied forth only to find inspiration in a photo I could paint but not sell. The irony of it. Anyway, I named it "Margurite nee Escuadra."

This was painted in August of 2005. I was actually happy with this painting.

This was one of my first acrylic paintings. It did absolutely nothing for me once it was finished. A girlfriend named Julie loved it and asked for it as a birthday gift. Since the previous birthday I had given her an Hermes pocket scarf, I was happy she thought as much of the painting.

It's called "Leave a Message." Cel phone on chair; high heels in grass; owner finally stopping to smell the roses.

About two years ago I did a couple of cartoons (not really sketches or caricatures) for some friends and used them to create personalized stationery. They loved them but it did not generate commissions as I had hoped. Here are a couple of examples.
