Yeah, you knew I had to go there.
Starting work on the Major this week. For this portrait I'm using an oil primed, Belgian linen, in an 18" x 24" stretched canvas. First, I sketched/transferred the image to the canvas with a blue pencil. I find that the blue doesn't disappear or smear when I oil the canvas. Then, using burnt umber, I go over the pencil with oil paint. I try to put in a few shadows at this point as well. After that I let the paint sketch dry.
I'm still considering what to do with the background. The Major did not want a flag or anything like that. Seeing as he is in Intelligence, the thought occurred to me to put the matrix in the background, all green and glowy with strings of symbols and numbers.
Just a passing thought. No, really.
